Le Parisien: There are of 2 types of Armenians, depending on cheese they like

15.08.2016

Ask Aret about the history of Armenia, and he will show the small bag he keeps in the Hay Ararat glass store he runs with his brother for nearly 30 years, wrote Le Parisiennewspaper of France. He shows the map of Armenia and neighboring countries, which is embroidered on the bag.

Welcome to Alfortville, a little town not far from Paris, and which is called “Little Armenia.” Seven thousand of the 45 thousand residents here are of Armenian origin.

Aret, who had moved to France from Istanbul in 1981, says Armenians in France can be divided into two types: Armenians who came from Armenia, Russia and Georgia and who buy Greek feta cheese, and the others.

The street is named after Komitas_Master Komitas (Soghomon Soghomonian), a renowned Armenian priest, composer, choir leader, singer, music ethnologist, music pedagogue, and musicologist_runs along the local Armenian church.

Father Dirair is preparing to serve a Divine Liturgy in the Armenian Apostolic Church. The church, which was built in 1930, packed on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. People are bringing grapes with them to be blessed.

"You can't eat them without blessing [first]," says Fr. Dirair. "It's our tradition."

There is another Armenian church, an Evangelical church, at Europe Square. And the bust of Mesrop Mashtots_the early medieval Armenian linguist, theologian, statesman and hymnologist who invented the Armenian alphabet_which was unveiled last year, is installed here.
