Decorative Arts

The most ancient branch of it, perhaps, is the art of gold and silver business connected with art processing of these precious metals, before all expressed intelligence and craft ability of the person. The masters who have comprehended the main law of an applied art — consistency and mutual conditionality of practical advantage and beauty made them, create the masterpieces enduring centuries.

The weapon — here a subject, drawing attention of the Armenian artists on metal since bronze epoch. At first cutting and pricking — swords, sabres and daggers. Heads, crossings and handles of the best exemplaries , that reached us, decorates incrustation and application from gold, silver, stones, a bone, copper and a brass in the most different colour combinations plentifully. Blades of daggers profiled and often decorated by the engraved both gilt inscriptions and scenes. At the beginning of XVI century in the Caucasus gets a fire-arm, which immediately becomes the favorite subject of decorations. Handguns and subjects to it — powder flasks, adaptations for a gunpowder dosage, keys to колесцовым locks were richly decorated with all kinds of decor. The bed and butts of guns were produced from noble breeds of a tree, incrustations by their nacre and a bone are frequent; notches, ornaments and inscriptions, gold and silver incrustation on trunks, locks and other iron details of the weapon — were a pride subjects as masters and owners.

Gold and silver business is difficult for defining as craft or art. At the very beginning of human history we find subjects from gold and silver, vessels and ornaments in which propensity of the person to creation of art forms has come to light. II millenium BC — the most probable epoch in which inhabitants of the Armenian highlands already used gold and silver. Gold and silver mines of the Armenian highland are mentioned at Strabon and Procopy Cesariya, the chemical analysis of many archeological finds shows that they were made of the gold extracted in mines the Sotq (Zod) which, unlike King Solomon's mines being developed in our time.

Jeweller art of the countries next to Armenia and the Armenian original jeweller art throughout last four millenia have created a precious alloy of technics and imagination. Art of moulding, a carving on gold and silver, stampings, incrustations by stones, their polishing and a frame — was expressed in numerous subjects of an ornament, a cult and a life of Armenians of those epoch. Almost since the invention of the Armenian alphabet for safety and an ornament of manuscripts produced gold and silver bindings.

The museum Edjmiatsin monastery are collected fine examples of Armenian church utensils - tabernacles, censers, chalices, scepters. Most ancient of them, the tabernacle of the XIII century, the former property of the princely family Proshyan, donated to the church Khotakerats Surb Nshan.

In use various social strata of the Armenian population throughout centuries had silver and gilt belts, buckles, buttons, caps, necklaces, rings, coffee and tea services. The part of it can be seen in the State museum of history of Armenia, in an ethnographic museum (Sardarabad), a museum of the Echmiadzin monastery.

Historical circumstances forced the Armenian jewellers work and outside of Armenia — in various cities of Caucasus and the Mediterranean, therefore examples of their works is possible to find in museum expositions and private collections of many countries.

The high technics of jeweller art is not lost in our days and it continues the best national traditions.
